About Buckhaven
On the east coast of Fife lays Buckhaven, on the Firth of Forth located between East Wemyss and Methil. Buckhaven is on the Fife Coastal Path, and near to Wemyss Caves and Largo Bay.
The name of Buckhaven is thought to be from the Scots terms buck or bukk “to gush out” and haven or “harbour”.
Once a thriving weaving village and port, known for fishing, it is said to have had the second-largest fishing fleet in Scotland with a total of 198 boats. Fishing declined during the end of 19th century, and Buckhaven changed more into a mining town. Coal waste blackened its beaches and its old harbour, it later became a Fife coastal holiday resort and recreation area for locals. Nowadays, it is classed as one of Fife’s ‘Regeneration areas’ in need of regeneration both socially and economically.
According to various sources and writers, the fishing community of Buckhaven is said to have been largely the descendants of Norsemen. They settled in the region in the ninth century. Many centuries later, Buckhaven’s fisher people bought an entire Church in St Andrews and moved it brick by brick to Buckhaven, using their boats. The same church was restored in the eighties and converted into a theatre. The building is owned by Buckhaven Parish Church since the conversion.
Buckhaven Museum has interesting displays on the history of the fishing industry of Buckhaven.
